El Clásico

The biggest football rivalry is back. Tonight the two Spanish powerhouses, Real Madrid CF and FC Barcelona will play the 230th competitive match between them and 263rd in total.
           In competitive matches Real Madrid has won 92 times and Barcelona is not too far behind with 89 wins under their belt. While in the total 262 matches (including friendly and exhibition matches) Barcelona leads with 108 wins to Real Madrid's 96.

            This arch rivalry has created many unforgettable memories throughout the years. In 2005 Ronaldinho and Diego Maradona in 1983 received a standing ovation from the Real Madrid fans at the Santiago Bernabéu. In the same way in 1980 Real Madrid's Laurie Cunningham received a standing ovation from the Barcelona fans at the Camp Nou after winning 2-0 .

In UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE semifinal in 2002 , RealMadrid's home leg which finished 1-1 is appreciated as the best football match of the century.

The biggest winning margin in an El Clásico is 11-1 in which Real Madrid smashed 11 goals into Barcelona's net in 1943.

Xavi Hernández(FCB), Manuel Sanchís(RM), Fancisco Gento(RM) has the most appearances in El Clásico with 42 appearances for their side.

The all time highest scorer of El Clásico is Leo Messi with 21 goals to his name. He also leads the Most Assists section with 13 assists in El Clàsicos.

Leo Messi(FCB) also tops the table of most hattricks jointly with Ferenc Puskás(RM) with two each.

In tonights El Clásico David Fernández Borbalán will be the referee , he has also been referee of two other El Clásico's previously.

This El Clásico will be the 171st Clásico of Laliga . In the current Laliga table Barcelona are on top with 3points clear to Real Madrid . But if Real Madrid wins they will top the table as they have a healthier Goal Difference.

Barcelona manager Luis Enrique has left a question mark on whether Messi is going to play or not. On the other hand Real Madrid manager Rafael Benitez is quite ready to take on the Catalan Giants at the Santiago Bernabéu.
